Our staff of engineers is a well-balanced team of both enthusiastic and flexible juniors and experienced seniors. It has a broad expertise regarding the modelling and control of diesel combustion and exhausts gas aftertreatment systems, with a special focus on model-based control. New control concepts and engineering tools are validated by utilizing the capabilities of our modern powertrain testing facilities. Utilising the wide spectrum of technical expertises available within TNO creates a unique capability to solve problems rapidly with innovative solutions.
NEW CONCEPTS
Aimed at more distant future is our integrated powertrain control concept in which supervisory control manages the engine, aftertreatment and driveline to optimize trade-off’s between fuel consumption, emissions and driveability. Other concepts provide practical solutions on short term, such as our model-supported OBD control to minimise the amount of required sensors or to increase the vehicle lifetime robustness. Models of the catalyst system based on actual physics and chemistry which are fast enough to run in real-time provide key information, for example concerning catalyst aging, to keep up catalyst performance throughout vehicle lifetime. Out of the box is our SCR technology based concept to meet Euro VI legislation. It provides an alternative solution to emissions during a cold start by applying a second SCR catalyst with a small volume close to engine exhaust in addition to the main large volume SCR catalyst. Our solution aims at a low cost and reduced complexity combination of smart controls, thermal management and EGR/SCR balancing which maximizes NOx conversion and requires only very small to moderate amounts of EGR.

TOOLS AND VALIDATION
Next to our new concepts we offer software tools that reduce the time and effort to achieve your development targets, for example to enable the maximum fuel economy of a given hardware configuration within the constraints of emission legislation. SIMCAT is a multi-purpose diesel aftertreatment simulation model library. The models are built using actual physics, instead of mathematical fit algorithms, resulting in a more reliable and robust simulation model. Once fitted to a certain hardware configuration or individual components, SIMCAT models provide an ideal platform for a range of applications such as feasibility assessments, catalyst sizing, control development, HiL validation, OBD monitor limit studies and so on. The SIMCAT brochure below provides more information.
